Despite the introduction of gender discrimination and equal legislation, the majority of women still receive lower salaries and lower status. According to the latest official figures (March, 2013) the gender pay gap in Cyprus is 16,4% (European Commission, 2013). Moreover, women face the so-called glass ceiling effect “the unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements” (Federal Glass Ceiling Commission, 1995, p. 4).
WoMEnpower (WE-ME) is a community platform that aims to link women mentors and mentees together. More specifically WE-ME is developed for helping young women receive support and advice in regards to self-improvement, aiming to increase their self-esteem, personal and social power, and solidarity. WE-ME aims at encouraging dialogue and mentoring between women both online and offline (face to face). The project consists of different components: an online exchange platform, where women across the Euro-med region can share their stories and overcome barriers, bimonthly successful narratives/stories from women in Euro-med region, a social media site that encourages visitors to share content with their friends and followers, and various face-to-face gatherings and events e.g. (First Womenpower Fair: http://cyprusinteractionlab.co
Currently, WE-ME has been successful with around 50 registered participants from across the Euro-med region in the online platform and more than 300 participants in the Womenpower Fairs and events.
